What is an infusion pump? What is an infusion pump for?

What is an infusion pump ?

The infusion pump is usually a mechanical or electronic control device, which achieves the purpose of controlling the infusion rate by acting on the infusion catheter. It is often used in situations where strict control of infusion volume and drug volume is required, such as in the application of vasopressor drugs, antiarrhythmic drugs, intravenous infusion of infants and young children, or intravenous anesthesia. The following is a discussion of the daily operation, maintenance and preservation of the infusion pump in combination with clinical practical application.

The concept of infusion pump:

Intravenous infusion is a commonly used mode of administration in clinical treatment. Depending on the nature of the drug and the patient's constitution, the speed of intravenous infusion is also different. Too fast or too slow infusion is difficult to achieve the expected therapeutic effect, and even affects the safety of nursing. At present, the common infusion set widely used clinically mainly relies on the liquid level difference pressure to input liquid to the receptor, and relies on the visual observation of the nursing staff and the manual adjustment of the wheel clip to control the infusion speed. Common infusion sets lack functions such as blockage alarm, bubble alarm, and liquid infusion completion alarm, which increases the burden of clinical care; and the liquid bottle is easy to introduce external air-contaminated liquid. Infusion pump The infusion pump is an instrument that can accurately control the number of infusion droplets or the infusion flow rate, and ensure that the drug can enter the patient's body at a uniform speed, accurately and safely. It is also an intelligent infusion device. The speed is not affected by the back pressure of the human body and the operator, and the infusion is accurate and reliable, which helps to reduce the intensity of clinical nursing work and improve the accuracy, safety and quality of care of the infusion.
There are various types of infusion pumps with different performances. According to its working characteristics, it can be divided into three types: peristaltic control infusion pump, constant volume control infusion pump and syringe microinjection infusion pump.

How the infusion pump works

1. Prepare the liquid medicine in the treatment room according to the doctor's order, check the quality of the liquid medicine, deterioration, discoloration, turbidity, whether the bottle mouth is loose, and the expiration date. Dosing and mixing in principle. Indicate the name, bed number, added drug name, and dosage on the bottle label, and ask a second person to check and assist the patient to take a comfortable lying position.
2. Adjust the infusion speed and predetermined infusion volume according to the doctor's order (adjust by 'select' on the infusion pump panel).
3. Fasten the tourniquet, select the blood vessel correctly, loosen the tourniquet, disinfect the skin with Andover, wait for it to dry, prepare the infusion patch, fasten the tourniquet, disinfect the skin with Andover again, perform puncture, and fix it correctly (same as infusion) operating procedure).
4. Record the drugs in the infusion pump, the liquid volume, and the infusion speed
